Real Daum Vase With African Violets And Hand Carved Martele
A Daum vase depicting blue African Violets. This vase has been expertly hand carved, resulting in beautiful relief flowers. The deep blue which emerges from the depths of this vase, gradually ease into a bright, cloudy base glass. This fade was achieved by a technique called martele. A process where cuts are made to the glass to give the surface of the glass texture like that of hammered silver. Artisans used large motors with abrasives attached to them. They would meticulously grind away glass, producing the variation of textures of hues seen here.
A similar method of grinding was used to add details to the flowers, the only difference was the shape of the abrasive used. Producing the carvings on this glass, as can be seen in the final product, requires great skill and a sharp artistic eye.
